Area Trades Council (ATC)

Union History and Represented Employees on Campus

The Area Trades Council consists of the following four (4) member unions:

  1. the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 877;
  2. the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 103;
  3. the Plumbers and Gasfitters, Local 12; and,
  4. the New England Regional Council of Carpenters, Local 5.

The Council has represented trades employees on the Harvard campus, under a single unified contract covering the four member unions, since 1975. Between 1957 and 1975, the bargaining unit was represented by various unions (including the Groundsmen and Truckmen Association, the Buildings and Grounds Maintenance Association, the Independent Association of Operating Engineers, the Laborers, Groundsmen and Truck Drivers Unit, and the Metropolitan Boston and Vicinity Craft Maintenance Council). The Council includes employees principally involved in tradeswork and maintenance operations across campus, including electricians, plumbers, carpenters, HVAC engineers, and other related positions.
